A Play Therapy for a Child from a Low-income Family Showing Difficulties in Emotional Expression
Lee Kyoung-Sook

Abstract
This case study discusses findings from a 37-session play therapy for a child from a low income family. The therapy was supported by the Dream Start of the Daejeon Metropolitan City. The major problems of the child were shyness making it difficult for her to adapt to a new environment and her difficulties expressing her thought and emotions by speaking. She usually expressed her feelings by crying, frequently leading to conflicts among family members. The top priority of the therapy was placed on building rapport to help her adapt to a new environment stably. The second goal was to improve her emotional awareness and expression, enhancing stable interpersonal relationship and social adjustment. Honest, emotional communication between the child and the counselor was stressed, through which the counselor helped the child to understand herself and learn how to express her feelings verbally. The last goal was to help her parents to understand their child through parent counseling to give her family support and emotional acceptance. The counselor received supervision to better understand developmental and environmental characteristics of the child. It took long time for the child to build rapport with the counselor. Once she established rapport with the counselor, however, she became happier and started to express her feelings gradually, challenging and adapting actively to new environments.
